|Brahms||sonata in E flat Op. 120 no 2 (the 2nd viola sonata)|
|Martinů||Cello Sonata no 1 H277|
|Kenneth Leighton||Alleluia Pascha Nostrum Op. 85|
|Brahms||Cello Sonata in F Op.99|
After much too long an absence we are delighted to welcome the return of this finest of cello and piano duos to open our new season. Their programme juxtaposes two Brahms sonatas with an underplayed masterwork of the Czech repertoire. The E flat Brahms sonata is more familiar in its original form as a clarinet sonata: but Brahms himself adapted it for viola and piano and it has been a simple step to make this splendid sonata available to cellists as well. The F major sonata is probably Brahms's finest. The Martinu, because unfamiliar, is not programmed as often as it should be. The Leighton is a late work and was written specially for Raphael.
We share the beliefs of the performers that the programme mixes the genres "beautifully and rather provocatively"
