Philip Smith baritone and Julius Drake piano<br> in Schubert's Schwanengesang

This is the last in our three year project to showcase the three great song cycles of Schubert's later years (he died aged 32). Tonight we hear Schubert's last published songs, known as Schwanengesang (Swansongs)together with other settings of poems by the same poets.

Since hanging up his waders as a zoologist and National Otter Surveyor of England, baritone Philip Smith has studied singing, first at the Birmingham Conservatoire and then with Barbara Robotham at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with distinction in 2008. He is a Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme alumnus, Samling Artist and Crear Scholar. Since graduation he has had a busy career in the opera house, in front of orchestras and in recital at home and abroad.
He has appeared at a number of the major festivals in the UK including the Aldeburgh Festival, The Kings Place Festival, Leeds Lieder Festival, Oxford Lieder Festival, the Cheltenham Festival and Wigmore Hall in a series of highly successful concerts, devised and presented by the pianist and animateur Dominic Harlan.

He is accompanied tonight by the Society's friend and Patron, doyen of accompanists Julius Drake.
