Welcome to the 16th season of these concerts which do so much to enliven the winter months in the Ripon area.
Friends since meeting as students at the Royal Northern College of Music, Esther Sofaer and Heejung Kim began playing together professionally as a piano duo in 2002. They are able to draw inspiration from their extensive studies both in the UK and abroad. Their diverse repertoire encompasses contemporary and lighter genres as well as the standard classical works. As Park Lane Artists, they have given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields and twice at the Purcell Room. Other concert highlights have included two substantial tours of the UK and appearances at the Chichester Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Deal Festival, Sounds New Festival and Lake District Summer Music Festival. Esther and Heejung are passionate about raising the profile of the piano duet. The medium, the repertoire of which spans from the seventeenth century to the present day, contains many hidden treasures, both original works and transcriptions. The form is unique in that it is the only musical encounter where two players exploit the full range of one instrument, making it not only musically but also visually exciting. The Kesh Piano Duo has three main aims. The first is to continue their educational work which involves outreach projects in different sectors of the community, bringing concerts and workshops to those unable to access them in everyday concert situations. The second aim is to champion new music for the medium as well as performing an existing repertoire which lies largely unknown. The third and most important aim is to use the piano duet to entertain. A unique medium, in that it utilizes the forces of two musicians at one instrument, the repertoire spans from Elizabethan times to the present day, embracing all styles and genres, offering something for everyone.
